The Lord heals (Exodus 15:22~27)

We have talked about the name of God since first week of this month.
Today is the third time so far.
The third name of God is Jehovah Rapha.
This name has brought me a lot of comfort in my life.
This name means “The Lord who heals”

It is always worrying when a family member is sick.
You neither want to see your family member’s suffer nor have a family who has a serious illness.
So whenever your family is sick you must pray for their healing, even if he or she is a nonbeliever.
God refers to Himself as Jehovah-Rapha, which means “the Lord who heals.”

The history behind this name of God is remarkable.
We are going to see where this name is written in Bible.
In the book of Exodus, God freed His people from slavery in Egypt.
God saved them from the force of the pharaoh’s army by opening up a way for them through the Red Sea.
While Israelites were wandering in the desert, they reached Mara, and began to be thirsty.
At last, there they found water, but it was bitter.
So the people started complaining about the water to God, then the Lord showed Moses a piece of wood.
Moses threw the wood toward the water and the water turned into sweet.
Then the Lord said to His people : “I am the Lord who heals you.”
In this story you can see the name of God Jehovah-Rapha.

It is His nature to heal, and we can find healing in His presence.
If Jesus did not intend to heal us, why does the Bible say He came as the Healer?
He did not just do it for the disciples or the people at that time. He does it now as well.
The Bible says Psalm 103:3, He is the Lord who “heals all your diseases.”
Isaiah 53:5, He is the Savior, who “by His stripes we are healed.”
Malachi 4:2, He is “the Sun of Righteousness” who arise “with healing in His wings.”
Hebrews 13:8, He “is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
It is not Jesus was the healer, It’s Jesus is the Healer.

And it’s not “if you would have been around when He was on earth in the flesh, you maybe could have been healed too.”
It’s “by his wounds you have been healed”(1 Peter 2:24).

Healing does not always happen immediately. So even though you pray but nothing happens, don’t give up.
As to why some are healed and some are not, that is God’s business.
Just because people prayed and person was not healed, does not mean neither God never heals nor so we should stop for healing.
It means we pray for His answer and trust God, whatever that is.
Praying is not telling to God what to do.
It is telling to Him about our desires and trusting Him and asking Him to answer according to His will.

Now I want to tell you one more thing. That is body care.
Healing and body care are different things.
When you ask God to heal you, this is something God does.
Taking care of your body is something you do. Both are vitally important.
God knows we are fallen lifetime and can not do everything perfectly.
That is why God sent Jesus to be our Healer.
But God also calls us to be good stewards over everything that He has given us, including our body.
He wants us to live in balance and to take care not to abuse our body any way.
He wants us to glorify Him in the care of our bodies because we are the temple of Holy Spirit.

Many of us tend to think, “Everything I have is the Lord’s, except for my eating and habits. Those are mine.”
That is why people drinks alcohol and smoke heavily as they like.
Or we think, “My life is the Lord’s but my body belong to me, and I can do with it whatever I want.”
So some people stupidly have a sex with anyone impulsively, in spite of they don’t get married yet.
But when we are the Lord’s, our body has to be surrendered to God just like everything else.
Caring for our body is not something we can do successfully, excluding His help.

I have actually heard people say, “I don’t worry about taking care of my body because the Lord can just heal me when I get sick.”
This kind of shameless thinking is dangerous and can get us into trouble.
That is very thing that Satan is planing to hurt us the most.
We can not live like that carelessly with this nonsense faith.
Because our body is not ours. It belongs to Jesus.

Therefor you have to ask God to help you resist what is bad for you and ask God to discipline you to do what is right.
God loves and values you. He created you. You are where His Holy Spirit dwells.
He wants you to live and value yourself enough to take good care of your body.

In spite of all our best effort, however, we can still get sick.
We can do everything we know what to do for our body and still become seriously ill.
For instance, we can inherit some diseases from our ancestors and we can get a diseases even we are not aware of and we could have an accident by any chance.
God knew all this, and so He sent Jesus as our Healer.
His healing touch is God’s mercy to us.

In the Bible, people who simply touched Jesus were healed.
Mark 6:56 says, “Wherever he went—in villages, cities, or the countryside—they brought the sick out to the marketplaces. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the hem of His garment, and all who touched him were healed.”
We, too, must touch Him to be healed.
The way we touch Him is to spend time in His presence.
Ask God to heal you, and then trust Him to do it by His way and at His time.
